...Oh No! Too Many Projects! I'll try to keep this one short...
To sort of continue where I left off on the last post about projects being worked on and games being played, I was thinking recently about a couple reports and things that happened this week like the alleged PS6 leak for November 2027, and the news of PC game sales surpassing console game sales. And as a genuine Internet Person, I've got many opinions. So here we go...
Opinion 1: Consoles should die actually.
Firstly, I don't necessarily think there is no place for consoles, but I do think we're finally at that point that we speculated about back in 2006 where there would only be "the one console to rule them all" except instead of 1 console, it's basically portable gaming PCs.
Opinion 2: PS4 and PS6 can mutually exist.
It would certainly be more work for multiple people and organizations to keep up with BIOS/firmware/OS updates and publishing on multiple platforms, but seriously there are so many reasons why people (~49% at writing) are still using PS4 and haven't upgraded to PS5. We don't NEED better AI face rendering chungus generation and whatnot. The system might cost upwards of $900 if the PS5 Pro is any indication, and people want shorter games with worse graphics made by people who are paid more to make less. I know a few people who are booting up their 3DS and Wiis because of the new life that's been delivered to those by the amazing work of hobbyist groups. We don't need PS6 (or Xbox Series Z?) exclusively. Let it end. Support old systems.
Opinion 3: We don't need Retro Games as a classification
People have summed this up better than I have, but basically when we talk about old movies or old books, we might list the year that they were released, but I don't think we specifically need to keep talking about them like they are relics of the past and have been dug up like dinosaur bones or are inherently worse... Especially since the retro games category is encompassing systems like the PS3 and 360 at this point in time.
Opinion 4: We don't need big publishers
It's nice to see that there are more small and indiependent publishers starting up lately. I don't really have any other explanation for this point. Big publishers get too big and harm the people that are working with and for them. That is all.
I've been thinking about games as art and what taking away the profit motive does for arts lately. I've also been thinking a lot about moving onto non-Steam and non-Google marketplaces with game releases. I might post more about these thoughts next month after I finish up some of the other projects I've been working on.
Keep making amazing things and supporting older systems! -slime
